Job Summary

Operating within the Finance & Accounting career area, the Director of Finance functions as the property’s strategic financial business leader. This position champions, develops, and implements property-wide strategies that deliver products and services to meet or exceed the expectations of the brand’s target customers and hotel employees. The role provides the financial expertise required to successfully implement brand service strategies and initiatives while maximizing return on investment (ROI). Additionally, the Director creates and executes an operational business plan focused on driving desirable financial results.

Core Work Activities

Strategic Planning and Decision Making

  • Profit Optimization: Develop financial models to improve profitability, including estimating costs, evaluating benefits, and exploring fresh business opportunities.

  • Budget & Forecasting: Analyze financial data, forecast sales against operational expenses, and build the property’s annual operating budget.

  • Variance Analysis: Track and monitor actual sales against projected revenue, breaking down data into separate components to evaluate differences between actual and forecasted labor wages.

  • Analytical Support: Provide ongoing analytical support during budget reviews to help department managers identify cost-saving and productivity opportunities.

  • Risk & Controls: Implement a robust framework of internal accounting and operational controls to manage business risks, safeguard hotel assets, and improve profitability.

  • Business Plan Execution: Think creatively and practically to execute an annual business plan aligned with both corporate and brand strategic directions.

Leading Finance Teams

  • Leadership by Example: Utilize strong communication skills to lead, influence, and encourage the team; advocate for honest, ethical financial decision-making.

  • Strategic Alignment: Clearly communicate strategic goals, business focus, and owner priorities to finance subordinates.

  • Audit & Governance: Oversee all internal, external, and regulatory property audit processes to ensure complete financial compliance.

  • Accountability: Manage the department by assigning team members and property managers clear accountability backed by appropriate authority.

  • Performance Management: Conduct formal annual performance appraisals with direct reports according to corporate standard operating procedures.

Stakeholder & Cash Flow Management

  • Owner Relations: Attend ownership meetings, maintain effective ongoing communication, and align operations with owner priorities, cash flow targets, and strategic focus.

  • Executive Advisory: Advise the General Manager and the Executive Committee on existing and evolving operating or financial challenges.

  • Working Capital: Manage property working capital and liquid cash flows in accordance with brand standards and ownership requirements.

Developing and Maintaining Finance Goals

  • Financial Integrity: Ensure Profits and Losses (P&L) are documented accurately, guaranteeing that costs are properly matched to revenue and recorded in the correct accounts.

  • Tax Compliance: Monitor all applicable local taxes, ensuring they are accurately collected, accrued, and remitted on time.

  • Balance Sheet Reconciliation: Reconcile balance sheets regularly to verify that account balances are supported by appropriate, compliant documentation.

  • Contractual Compliance: Ensure total compliance with the hotel management contract, local standard operating procedures, and corporate reporting deadlines.

Human Resource Activities

  • Onboarding & Training: Participate in hiring activities, ensuring new department assets complete the structured orientation program and receive appropriate job training.

  • Cross-Training: Ensure team members are cross-trained to support continuous daily operations during absences.

  • Talent Development: Establish individual development plans based on team members’ unique strengths, growth needs, and career aspirations.

Candidate Profile

Education and Experience

  • A 4-year Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related major; paired with a minimum of 3 years of professional experience in finance, accounting, or a related corporate area.

  • OR

  • A Master’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related major; paired with a minimum of 1 year of professional experience in a related corporate finance arena.
